Running Grants ---- AAHPERD Unique Running Lesson Plans ---- National Standards for Physical Education

ING Run For Something Better® Grant Program
Now Open

Grants for school running programs increased to $3,500 per school

This holiday season, ING U.S. is giving schools nationwide a unique opportunity to help students discover a passion for running and living a healthy lifestyle through its ING Run For Something Better School Awards. In partnership with the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), ING U.S. will provide a minimum of 60 grants of $3,500 each in 2014. The grant process is now open at www.aahperd.org/run.

The ING Run For Something Better School Awards are available for programs that target kindergarten through 8th-grade students. The grant supports a minimum of an eight-week, school-based running program that concludes with a culminating running event in celebration of the students’ achievements. An AAHPERD review board, made up of physical education teachers and administrators, reviews all applications and selects the recipients.

In addition to the grants, schools can download unique running lesson plans developed by AAHPERD and based on the National Standards for Physical Education to serve as the foundation of the running program or to supplement an existing school program. Other program materials — such as sample eight-week training plans, distance logs and a running journal — will be available to help in the development of running skills and preparation for a final running event.

To learn about the program, including full eligibility requirements and to apply for the grant, visit www.aahperd.org/run. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2014, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

The Last Green Mile: Reducing the Environmental Impact of Instructional Materials
From recycling programs to water conservation, from LEED certification to community gardens, and from recycled lunch trays to eco-friendly supplies, U.S. schools have made significant environmental improvements. Nearing the finish line, what's left to close the gap on the "last green mile" within schools, offering the potential to save more than 4 million trees, nearly 2 billion gallons of water and 2.5 trillion BTUs of energy every year? Answer: Textbooks and instructional materials, which are currently printed on paper with little or no recycled fiber.

In this webinar, join education industry veteran Dave Long, environmental expert Susan Kinsella, and GreenSchools.org founder Robin Organ for a discussion on green schools, the potential impact of using high-recycled (>90%) paper, and how schools can begin to make this shift to stay on the leading edge of sustainability initiatives nationwide.
Guests:
Susan Kinsella, executive director, Conservatree
Dave Long, former California secretary of education
Robin Organ, founder, GreenSchools.org

This webinar will be moderated by Paul Bradshaw, vice president, FutureMark Paper Group.
