Memorial Day

Thank you to all the men and women who are currently serving our country, thank you to those who have served and thank you to those that paid the ultimate sacrifice to serve and thank you to all of the families.

Memorial Day is an American holiday.  Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May and honors men and women who died while serving in the United States military.  Originally the day was known as Decoration Day and it originated from the years following the Civil War.  Memorial Day became a federal holiday in 1971.  Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and parades.  For more information, please use the links below.

Summer Brain Gain: Reimagining Summer Learning
Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) continues to "rewrite the book" on how summer vacation also can be a time of summer learning. Studies have found that summer break, if not actively managed, can be a period of learning loss that almost invariably accumulates over time.
Through programs like Summer Brain Gain, BGCA hopes to reframe the conversation around out-of-school time and the importance of summer learning. In 2014, BGCA members who participated in Summer Brain Gain's project-based learning practices showed significant improvements in reading (fifth- and eighth-graders) and math skills (fourth- , fifth-, and sixth-graders). Representatives from BGCA will lead a discussion on the state of the industry, potential solutions for keeping our youth on track with summer learning, and why this subject is of extreme importance to our community of educators.
Guests:
Kimberly Boyd, national vice president, youth development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Ron Fairchild, president and CEO, the Smarter Learning Group
This webinar will be moderated by Jami Pettway, senior director, summer learning, Boys & Girls Clubs of America

Are children from Spanish-speaking families among your ADHD patients? Would you like tips for providing culturally competent ADHD treatment that meets the needs of these children and their families?

Dr. Alyson Gerdes works closely with Spanish-speaking families to develop and provide culturally appropriate evaluation and treatment for ADHD.  She will offer guidance to health care providers on the following aspects of ADHD treatment:
  • global and cultural adaptations
  • addressing parental concerns on children's behavior
  • how traditional family roles affect parental involvement
Professionals will learn tools to help improve client outcomes when cultural differences are present. This important webcast is not to be missed.
PRESENTER:
Alyson Gerdes

Alyson C. Gerdes, Ph.D., leads research to inform and guide clinicians treating childhood ADHD. Her research includes examining evidence-based assessment and treatment of childhood ADHD, culturally-appropriate clinical practices and Latino mental health disparities, and parent-child and peer relationships of youth with ADHD.

Recent projects include best recruitment practices for Latino families, translating Spanish versions of commonly-used assessment and treatment outcome measures, examining Latino parental perceptions about ADHD, the role of culture in parental recognition and motivation to seek help for ADHD, and developing a culturally-appropriate measure of functional impairment for ADHD.

More information about Dr. Gerdes' program of research is available on her webpage

Guiding Parents Through School Choice
In cities where traditional school boundaries are fluid and more options, such as charters, have entered the mix of K-12, selecting a school is an increasingly complex endeavor for parents. Recent research shows that an abundance of school choice doesn't guarantee access, and many parents in high-choice cities struggle to find adequate information, transportation, and, ultimately, the right school for their children. But some cities, like Denver, are leading the way in practices to help ease the burden on parents, such as universal enrollment systems and partnerships between districts and charter schools to assist parents in making informed choices. Our guests will discuss the realities, research, and practice of guiding families through choice.
Underwriting for the content for this webinar has been provided by the Walton Family Foundation
Guests:
Brian Eschbacher, director of planning and enrollment services, Denver school district
Betheny Gross, senior research analyst and research director, Center on Reinventing Public Education, University of Washington
